[Lo sapevate? Sapevatelo!] Mr. Slint

Gli Slint - Brian McMahan (chitarra, voce),  Britt Walford (batteria), David Pajo (chitarra), Ethan Buckler (basso) -, da Louisville, divennero famosi come il gruppo che diede i natali al post-rock. Aventi all'attivo appena due album e un singolo, sono passati inosservati quando attivi per diventare una delle maggiori figure di culto del rock odierno col passare del tempo. Capaci di segnare un'epoca, senza forse neanche volerlo, gli Slint erano alfieri di un hardcore completamente stravolto e privato della propria natura, dal ritmo cadenzato e dalla struttura innovativa, lontana da qualsiasi cliché tipico del rock. L'influenza degli Slint sulla scena musicale americana degli anni '90 è incalcolabile (#)

In 2008, Scottish band The Twilight Sad released an EP called "...Killed My Parents and Hit the Road". The name and album artwork, which features a re-work of the Goo cover in the style of previous Twilight Sad artwork, are homages to Goo. According to vocalist James Graham, guitarist Andy MacFarlane came up with the idea, and noted that "[The Twilight Sad] were playing in America with Mogwai [...] and Thurston Moore [came] to the gig. So we were thinking "fuck" and hoping he didn’t see the merchandise table. They haven’t sued us though. Yet." (#)

[Io c'ero] Interpol + Surfer Blood @ Palasharp Milano

Sono le 19.30 quando la Sbart ed io varchiamo i cancelli del Palasharp, attraversiamo con calma irreale il lungo corridoio formato dalle bancarelle di panini e merchandising (ci sono anche i bavaglini col logo Interpol) e ci dirigiamo emozionate ma sicure verso l'ingresso. All'interno il Palasharp è ancora semivuoto e sono a lungo tentata di restare in piedi a ridosso di quelli che hanno guadagnato i posti migliori proprio sotto al palco, ma poi mi dico che non ho più l'età e propongo alla Sbart le tribunette laterali. Dalla nostra comoda postazione guardiamo il palazzetto che si riempie e facciamo un po' di studi sociologici: pubblico piacevolmente eterogeneo, età media sui 25-30 anni, più maschi che femmine, qualche coppia abbondantemente sopra i 30, addirittura qualche genitore che è venuto ad accompagnare il figlio e siede in tribuna tentando di darsi un contegno magari leggendo un libro.

Alle 20.30 in punto i Surfer Blood salgono ed attaccano in fretta con Fast Jabroni. In 45 minuti scarsi eseguono un po' tutto il loro repertorio davanti ad un pubblico distratto ma che non li fischia mai. Sarà che mi ero preparata e conoscevo le loro canzoni, sarà che son giovanissimi e mi fanno tenerezza sul quel palco troppo grande per loro, sarà che assomigliano ad almeno tre gruppi che amo (Pavement, Vampire Weekend, Weezer), ma io mi sono divertita e li ho apprezzati.

Qualche minuto di pausa - in cui ci raggiunge per salutarci il collega blogger Rykjvk - e poi eccoli i nostri, tanto attesi, per la loro unica data italiana. In look total black e avvolti dai fumogeni salgono tutti insieme sul palco e aprono il concerto con la prima traccia dal loro ultimo album, Success, al termine della quale un Paul Banks particolarmente cordiale dice il primo "grazie" in italiano della serata. Si inizia a far sul serio con Say Hello to the Angels, vecchio singolo da Turn on the bright lights. Da qui si alternano in maniera regolare brani vecchi e nuovi (qui la setlist del concerto), e così alla fine un po' tutti possono dirsi soddisfatti. Non ci sono Leif Erikson e Obstacle 1, è vero, ma c'è la mia preferita in assoluto, Take you on a cruise, in un'esecuzione molto sentita, e Rest my chemistry, per me il miglior brano da Our love to admire.

Paul Banks

Nella seconda metà del concerto sia il pubblico che il gruppo si sono scaldati al punto giusto: un babbo batte il tempo con la testa e applaude, la mamma disperata col libro ha socializzato con altri genitori davanti a lei e sembra quasi di sentirli dire che "via, non sono niente male questi qua". Alla fine di Barricade Banks chiede "This was Barricade. Come si dice in italiano? Non lo so". Poi indica qualcuno della prima fila e ringrazia per il suggerimento.

Alla fine solo tre bis. Daniel, Paul, Dave Pajo e Sam rientrano sul palco uno dopo l'altro per un'inaspettata e struggente The lighthouse, poi gran finale tutti in piedi a saltare e battere le mani al ritmo di Evil (Yes, fuckin' right! - dice alla fine compiaciuto Paul) e The Heinrich Maneuver. Professionali ed eleganti, distanti ma gentili, tecnicamente impeccabili come non avrei creduto.

Un mio aneddoto sugli Interpol. Anni fa, quando non li conoscevo ancora, me ne parlava ossessivamente un mio collega nonchè pusher musicale. Dato che però non mi fidavo del tutto dei suoi gusti, avevo sempre snobbato il consiglio. Poi per caso, sarà stato il 2003, su una radio indie ascoltai Obstacle 1 e caddi dalla sedia morta-e-dura. Mi procurai Turn on the bright lights e per diverse settimane fui preda di una delle peggiori (o migliori) trance musicali che io ricordi.

Incredibile a dirsi, solo dopo altri 6 mesi mi presi la briga di andare a cercare che faccia avessero, questi Interpol. Beh, fu un colpo di fulmine globale-totale, che ve lo dico a fare?

Altrettanto non posso dire per questi The National, associati agli Interpol per la voce baritonale à la Jan Curtis dei cantanti. Ma dopo aver ascoltato la stupenda Mistaken for Strangers ho cercato in lungo e in largo altre canzoni di questo gruppo che mi piacessero alla stessa maniera, ma niente da fare. Inoltre sono 5, e per me 3/4 è il numero perfetto e poi - posso?- sono trooooppo sfigati. Insomma, uno ascolta una cosa così cupa e bella e si aspetta qualcosina, giusto?

Nondimeno, questa canzone merita una bella segnalazione nel mio blog-diario perchè mi piace troppo.
